Failure to Report Child Abuse at a Buffalo High School
In October 2024, a female student at a Buffalo high school confided in her school counselor that she was being physically abused by her father. Despite being a mandated reporter, the counselor failed to notify the authorities or take appropriate action. The student returned to school on two subsequent occasions with signs of abuse, but it was only after the third incident, when she arrived with visible injuries described as “black and blue,” that the school took action. The child was immediately removed from her parent’s custody in an emergency intervention, and her father was subsequently arrested and charged with third-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
This incident was highlighted by Buffalo Police Detective Richard Hy during an appearance on the “Unsubscribe Podcast,” where he accused Buffalo Public Schools of failing to protect children from abuse and obstructing police investigations. The case exemplifies the alleged systemic issues within the school district regarding the reporting and handling of child abuse cases.
